Challenge
Agnico Eagle was looking to create an “all company” approach to advance Indigenous Relations and demonstrate its ongoing commitment to Reconciliation. The organization was looking to use its inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to capture achievements to date and set new targets and strategies for all employees. The challenge was to develop a RAP that served as a guide for the entire company while ensuring that commitments were meaningful and relevant to the diverse geographies in which Agnico Eagle operates.

Our Approach
Using Creative Fire’s proprietary current state assessment tool, our team conducted a comprehensive review of all internal and external documents related to Indigenous relations and assess Agnico Eagle’s strengths and growth opportunities.

We then led in-person engagement sessions with Indigenous community members in Northern Ontario, Northern Quebec and Nunavut to better understand how Agnico Eagle could enhance its support for local communities. Additionally, we engaged with Indigenous employees in Mexico and Australia to incorporate perspectives from other geographies.

The team also conducted internal engagement sessions with Agnico Eagle employees to capture their expectations for advancing Reconciliation. Customized surveys were sent to those unable to attend sessions to ensure all voices were heard and included in the project.

Using insights from these assessments and engagements, Creative Fire developed a set of recommended actions to positively impact Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous employees across Agnico Eagle’s operations. We developed a comprehensive communications guide to ensure the RAP gained and maintained traction internally and externally. To complement the final RAP, we collaborated with an Indigenous artist to create unique visuals that reflected the essence of Agnico Eagle’s commitments and honored Indigenous culture. We also supported the translation of the RAP into Inuktitut and French.

Impact
Agnico Eagle now has an enterprise-wide Reconciliation Action Plan that applies to all employees and operations, supporting its vision to advance relationships with Indigenous Peoples. The RAP sets a clear path forward for the organization and aligns with Agnico Eagle’s broader goal of supporting sustainable self-reliance of Indigenous Nations in the geographical areas where the organization operates.
