Lately, I have been asked a lot about my views on Indigenous Peoples voting in Canadian elections.
I frequently get the following question: Why don’t First Nations people vote in provincial or federal elections? And First Nations people ask: Why should I vote? Does my vote matter? Will it make a difference or make it better for my people and my community?
My experience with provincial and federal elections is as a successful candidate in the 2006 federal election, but also as a keen observer during my six years as Grand Chief at the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) – elected governments greatly impact First Nation and Métis political realities.
I thought I would share my experiences and observations over the next few weeks and provide a forum for the sharing of information, stories and experiences, regardless of who you are or where you come from. All views are welcomed.
I want to stress that I am not endorsing anyone or any one Party. I am simply sharing my own thoughts, observations and experiences on Indigenous voting for the upcoming federal and provincial elections.
